London Philharmonic - SOH
Sydney Opera House presents the renowned London Philharmonic Orchestra with the Australian debut of Principal Conductor, Vladimir Jurowski.

This evening’s repertoire is full of inspired works; inspiration derived from art, music and the heavy feeling of one's own fate.

Rachmaninov’s journey between earth and underworld in Isle of the Dead was inspired by Böcklin’s painting and remains one of the symphonic repertoire’s great tone poems.

Ravel’s trip through the US introduced the composer to the rhythms of jazz. He remarked, ‘Personally I find jazz most interesting: the rhythms, the way the melodies are handled, the melodies themselves.’ These jazz influences found their way into his Piano Concerto in G major, a dazzling highlight of the piano concerto repertoire.

And finally fate. This concept has shaped and sharpened the art of music for centuries. In 1877, Tchaikovsky felt its weighty hand on his shoulder. His artistic response was a symphony completely unlike anything he had created before: ‘This is fate’, he confided to a friend, explaining the opening notes of his heart-on-sleeve Symphony No. 4. ‘It hangs above your head like the sword of Damocles.’ But by the symphony’s final chapter, Tchaikovsky’s darkness had turned to light. ‘Rejoice in others’ rejoicing’, he urged, and the symphony veers towards unstoppable, ebullient joy.
