We're a country of extremely funny people and so some of our local comedians have become some of the most recognised around the world, Paul Hogan, Dame Edna and Kath and Kim poke fun at our distinctly Australian sensibilities and we love them for it. Australian comedians tend to be a satirical, cynical lot. We love to point out our own foibles and comedians such as Paul McDermott, Dave Hughes and Wil Anderson exemplify this type of humour the best. Elsewhere it’s easy to find our Australian comedians, on our radios in the morning and in the afternoon, on our televisions and at your local venue performing stand-up. In the past year, Lasttix has had access to many of these stand-up shows with some of our funniest comedians including Tom Gleeson, Josh Thomas, Adam Hills and Fiona O’Loughlin. There are always a number of funny people from overseas coming to our shores. Robin Williams, Billy Connolly, Wayne Brady and Carrie Fisher are all superstars coming to Australia for a visit. Russell Peters, Arj Barker and Tony Woods regularly return to Australia to sold-out shows.

And if you can’t decide what you like and want to try everything, almost all the capital cities in Australia hold regular Comedy Festivals. From the world-famous Melbourne International Comedy Festival to the Wild West Comedy Festival in WA to the deliciously entertaining Coffs Harbour International Buskers and Comedy Festival, you’re never short of a day of absolute laughs.

For those who are more into play and skit type performances, there are always plenty of fantastic performance pieces to tickle your funny bones. For those with high-brow tastes, Bell Shakespeare seasonally produces Shakespeare’s comedic works such as Twelfth Night or Much Ado about Nothing. The Arts Centre in Melbourne and QPAC in Brisbane show humourous plays from up and coming writers and there are always surprise shows such as Avenue Q which is a bit risqué for children but is perfect for an adults night out.
